The foreign Ministry of Ukraine announced that it has summoned the Ambassador of Belarus in connection with the detention of Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan. According to “Interfax-Ukraine”, Zhadan was detained on 11 February in Minsk
The Ukrainian foreign Ministry summoned the Ambassador of Ukraine to Belarus Igor Sokol “in connection with the detention of Belarusian competent authorities” Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan, reported on the website of the MFA of Ukraine.
The Ambassador expressed “deep concern about the situation with the detention and prohibition of entry of Serhiy Zhadan, attention is drawn to the consistency of such actions of the Belarusian law enforcement authorities against citizens of Ukraine”.
As noted in the Ministry, currently received explanations of the Belarusian side “does not satisfy the Ukrainian side.” In the near future will hold telephone conversation of heads of foreign policy departments of Ukraine and Belarus.
According to “Interfax-Ukraine” in the night of Saturday, February 11, in Minsk at the hotel “Jubilee” employees of militia detained Zhadan until the morning kept him at the station. In militia he was told that he was with 2015 denied entry to Russia with the phrase “for his involvement in terrorist activities,” since Belarus and Kazakhstan are Russia visa in one zone, the ban is automatically extended to these two countries.
First Vice-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Iryna Gerashchenko in his Facebook said that the Ukrainian foreign Ministry is preparing a note of protest in connection with detention of the writer. According to her, employees of the Ukrainian Embassy was accompanied by Zhadan at the airport and before crossing the border.
“It’s really a shame, and it is time to firmly put the question to Minsk on the inadmissibility of actions of the FSB that such a shameful manner, through the formation of shared blacklists, trying to worsen our Belarusians bilateral relations,” she said.
