The jury of the World Press Photo contest have awarded top prize to Turkish photographer Burhan, Ozbilici, who managed to shoot the murderer of the Ambassador of Russia to Turkey Andrei Karlov immediately after the attack
The most important photo taken by someone photographers all over the world in 2016, the jury of the World Press Photo contest has recognized the Turkish photographer Burhan, Ozbilici, which captures the murderer of the Ambassador of Russia to Turkey Andrei Karlov. In the message of the organizing Committee it is also noted that ozbilici, also recognized as the best in the category “breaking news”.
Member of the jury for World Press Photo Marie Calvert explained that the winner is a photo, which only killed the Russian Ambassador mevlüt MERT Altıntaş something shouts, standing over the body of the victim was extremely difficult. The winners of the World Press Photo contest are determined since 1955, the Grand prize (currently it is €10 thousand) is awarded to images that “represent a situation or event of great journalistic importance, while demonstrating an outstanding level of visual perception”.
Burhan, Ozbilici became the second Turkish photographer, whose picture was recognized by the jury of World Press Photo photo of the year. In 1984 the award was given to Mustafa Bozdemir, in the picture which was a picture of a mother grieving over the bodies of his five children who died in the earthquake in Turkey.
Russian photographers the main prize, World Press Photo has received never. In 2016, the first prize World Press Photo in the category “news” has received the Russian photographer Sergey Ponomarev for photos on arriving in Europe the refugees. The winner in the category “Sports” in the same year, was the photographer MIA “Russia today” Mr Song, who made a photo report about the hockey club “Vetluga”.
