Russia considers its sovereign right to give names of five unnamed Islands in the Kuril chain. This was stated press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov.

The Kremlin noted that Japan’s position on the Islands, territorial affiliation, which is Tokyo’s disputes, well-known. In the recent time on this issue in relations between the two countries has been “positive dynamics” that Moscow “appreciates”, said the spokesman.

“We intend to maintain this momentum. But still, the Kuril Islands, of course, remain the territory of the Russian Federation, so in this case we are talking about sovereign right”, — said Peskov (quoted by “RIA Novosti”).

On Friday, February 10, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree on the naming of previously unnamed five Kuril Islands. Give the names of the Islands proposed the Sakhalin branch of the Russian geographical society.

The Islands were named in honor of Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko, General-Lieutenant Alexei Gnecco, diplomat Andrei Gromyko, former Governor of Sakhalin Igor Farkhutdinov and captain Anna Shchetinina.

Tokyo has sent Moscow a note of protest over giving the names of disputed territories, which became part of the Soviet Union after the Second world war.

In mid-December, President Vladimir Putin met with Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe, the two sides discussed “the possibility of concluding a peace Treaty” in a dispute about ownership of the Islands.
