Donald trump “made it clear” that he expects Russia to return the Crimea, said press Secretary of the White house Sean Spicer. Trump also expects Russia to de-escalate violence in Ukraine
The US President Donald trump “made it clear” that he expects Russia to return the Crimea and the reduction of violence in Ukraine, said at a briefing press Secretary of the White house Sean Spicer, Reuters reports.
“President trump has made it clear that he expects the Russian government to de-escalate the violence in Ukraine and the return of the Crimea”, — he stressed. At the same time, added Spicer, he “fully expects to get along with Russia and wishes it.”
In addition, the press Secretary, the White house said that the confidence of the trump adviser Michael Flynn “was undermined”. “The problem, frankly, was undermining trust,” said Spicer. According to him, trump did not say Flynn to discuss U.S. sanctions against Russia with the Russian diplomat.
9 Feb Spicer reported that the USA intends to withdraw from Moscow sanctions imposed in connection with the annexation of Crimea. “I believe that the US representative in the UN [to Nikki. — RBC] Haley is clearly expressed in the UN our position,” — said the representative of the White house.
Haley appointed U.S. permanent representative to the UN on 25 January, in his first public statement February 3, spoke about the situation in the Donbass, calling it “appalling” and noting that the situation in Eastern Ukraine requires US “to condemn Russia’s actions”. Speaking about the Crimea, she marked the Peninsula “as another part of Ukraine, suffering from the aggressive actions of Russia”. She stated that concerning Crimea sanctions will not be lifted until Russia will not return to Kiev control over the territory.
In July 2016, trump said that, in his opinion, the people of Crimea “would prefer to be with Russia, but not where he was before,” and confirmed his intention to consider recognition of Crimea as part of Russia in case of victory in the elections. The Republican candidate also claimed that the attempt by the US force to return the Crimea to Ukraine could lead to world war III.
Crimea became part of Russia following a referendum held on the Peninsula March 16, 2014. Ukrainian authorities and Western countries did not recognize the referendum results. They consider the annexation of Crimea a violation of international law and call it “annexation.”
