Moscow is ready to restore cooperation with the Pentagon, but attempts to build it with the “position of strength” hopeless, said Sergei Shoigu. On the eve of this dialogue with Russia urged the new head of the defence Department of the USA
Attempts of the Pentagon to build a dialogue with Moscow with the “position of power” are “hopeless”. This was stated by the Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu, reports “RIA Novosti”.
He was commenting on a statement by the new Pentagon chief James Mattis, made the day before, on February 15. During his first meeting with NATO allies Mattis said that the US is willing to restore cooperation with Russia, but added: “At the same time, we are realistic in our expectations and recommendations of our diplomats to negotiate from a position of strength”.
Shoigu drew attention to the fact that on Thursday, February 16, in Baku will host a meeting of chief of the General staff of the Russian Armed forces Valery Gerasimov with his American counterpart Joseph Denford. At this meeting Russia “is waiting for clarification of the position of the Pentagon,” said Shoigu.
As reported earlier, the “Interfax” in the information Department of the defense Ministry, the meeting will discuss “the current state and prospects of military cooperation between Russia and the United States, as well as preventing incidents in connection with military activities of the parties.”
