Proxima b planet recently discovered orbiting a red dwarf Proxima Centauri, in all likelihood, very similar to Earth, and possesses huge reserves of water. This, in turn, means that this exoplanet and many others like her might exist life. To this conclusion came a group of Swiss researchers from the University of Berne.


Proxima b, the opening of which was announced in August this year, is, in the cosmic sense, literally “near the planet, the distance is a little over 4 light-years. When this planet is in the so-called habitable zone, i.e. at a distance from its star that allows water on the planet to exist in liquid form, not freezing and not evaporating. However, the question of whether it is possible to speak about high probability of the existence of life on this planet, the controversial scientists.

In the new study, scientists have made a number of computer models, based on already known information on Proxima b and other “twins” of the Earth orbiting red dwarf stars that were discovered recently (including also located at a distance of only 40 light years away the planet TRAPPIST-1). As a result, they came to the conclusion that the oceans covering the planet’s surface, may account for about 10 percent of the total mass of such cosmic bodies. the Scientists clarify that the mere existence of liquid water seems to be one of the most important conditions for the birth of life, however, this “abundance” of that element may even reduce the chances of its occurrence due to the greenhouse effect caused by water vapor. But somehow, the experts tend to consider the research evidence that planets similar to Proxima b, can still be inhabited.

The results obtained, the researchers reported in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Earlier, another group of scientists has been suggested that Proxima Centauri b may be covered with habitable ocean of liquid water. Specialists under the guidance of bastien Bruges from Marseille University have calculated the approximate radius of a celestial body and comparing this data with the already known at that time, her weight came to the conclusion that a planet like Earth can be a “layer cake” of rock cores, ocean of liquid water on the surface and relatively thin atmosphere that would declare a planet potentially habitable.

Also recently, astrophysicists from the Harvard-Smithsonian center for astrophysics have found that Proxima Centauri, which revolves around a planet more like the Sun than you would expect from a normal red dwarf.
