Archaeologists from Mexico and the US have discovered inside the temple of Kukulkan in the sacred Mayan city of Chichen Itza on the Yucatan Peninsula another pyramid. Find it experts managed using the method of three-dimensional electrical tomography.
The pyramid of Kukulkan is dedicated to one of the Supreme deities in the Mayan mythology, the God of water, fire and air, the patron of literature and fishing. Kukulkan in the Mayan mythology corresponds to Quetzalcoatl in Aztec mythology. The famous pyramid, on top of which in the past was a place of sacrifice, today included in the list of world heritage sites of UNESCO and is very popular among tourists.
In 40-ies of the last century, it became known that inside the pyramid is another, smaller but similar in shape design. But recently the specialists of the University of California at San Diego and at the National Autonomous University of Mexico failed to detect the third layer of this “doll”. Experts do not exclude that discovered within the pyramids may be smaller in size structure. “Internal” the pyramid was small in size and, as the researchers note, it is somewhat uneven on the two already known.
The detected height of the pyramid is about 10 meters and a width of approximately 30 meters. “Intermediate” pyramid reaches a height of 20 meters, and the pyramid of KUKULCAN — 24 meters. According to scientists, built the “inner” pyramid was in the period of 500 to 800 BC.
Last year, the same group of experts found under the pyramid of Kukulkan underground karst lake with a depth of about 20 meters, which as the pyramid itself and the internal construction may be under threat of destruction.
