The Pentagon may abandon the purchase of Russian helicopters for Afghanistan

The Pentagon wants to abandon the purchase of Russian Mi-17 helicopters for the Armed forces and security services of Afghanistan. Instead, the American defense Ministry intends to purchase equipment produced in the country, reports TASS.

The Senator from Connecticut Richard Blumenthal issued a statement which says that the Pentagon plans to end its dependence on Russian technology and the transition to multi-purpose helicopters UH-60A Black Hawk of Sikorsky Aircraft company.

While Blumenthal noted that he had repeatedly made such a proposal. In his opinion, the Russian equipment has lower quality.

Earlier, the US lifted sanctions against the “Rosoboronexport” contract for maintenance of Mi-17 helicopters in Afghanistan.

Russia delivered to Afghanistan aircraft to combat international terrorism with the agreement of the Pentagon. The main contract was signed in 2011.
