The third anniversary of the start of Euromaidan Ukraine said protests and clashes with police. Hundreds of nationalists attacked an office of the former head of the administration of Leonid Kuchma Victor Medvedchuk, who is the godfather of the Russian President

Nationalist parties and movements in Ukraine on Monday, November 21, celebrated the third anniversary of protests in Kiev. The protests, which resulted in riots and clashes of protesters with the police three years ago were triggered by the failure of the authorities to sign the Association agreement with the EU.

As reported the press service of Kiev city administration, quoted by RIA “Novosti”, applications for protests filed several organizations, including the nationalist — civil case “Azov” (organized by the eponymous military battalion), “Right sector”, etc.

As reports the Ukrainian edition “Strenia” on Institutskaya street, near the intersection with Bankova participants in the “Azov” and students staged an impromptu flash mob with the issues the President Petro Poroshenko. They wrote their questions on the posters and hung them along the way. The participants of the flash mob held signs with questions to Poroshenko: “When will you stop killing people in the East,” “Who killed Euromaidan? Debaltseve? The WCT? [Donetsk airport]”.

Night radicals

The morning’s action took place peacefully, but by evening the passions intensified. According to the General Directorate of the National police of Ukraine in Kiev, at 19:00 on the Maidan gathered about 400 people. Some participants tried to carry on the rally tires, but the police did not miss.

At some point the crowd of demonstrators went to the office of the public movement “the Ukrainian choice”, whose leader is the former head of the presidential administration of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, Viktor Medvedchuk. To celebrate the third anniversary of protests on Maidan activists broke into an empty building Windows and cracked the front door, the police assault is not prevented, reported by an eyewitness.

Medvedchuk from 2002 to 2005 headed the administration of President Leonid Kuchma. He is a supporter of the federalization of Ukraine. In April 2012, Medvedchuk has created a public organization “the Ukrainian choice”. Ukrainian media has repeatedly reported about the close contacts of Medvedchuk with the Russian political elite, including about his relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The politician is the godfather of Putin, the Russian President in 2004, baptized Medvedchuk’s daughter. In an interview with “Novaya Gazeta” in July 2016, responding to a question about cronyism with Putin, Medvedchuk said that “so say those who are jealous of me” and “it is an honour for me.”

After the outbreak of hostilities in the Donbas in June 2014 Medvedchuk to mediate exploratory talks between the OSCE, the official authorities of Ukraine and the self-proclaimed Luhansk people’s Republic and Donetsk people’s Republic. Medvedchuk was a mediator for the exchange of prisoners.

After this, the activists moved to the next building of Sberbank of Russia. Shouting “Glory to Ukraine — glory to heroes!” the protesters smashed the entrance door to the Bank, but was soon pushed by the National police. After a short clash, the storm stopped, and the protesters decided to return to the Maidan, told RBC a witness. According to him, during clashes with the police had detained three people. The interlocutor of RBC reported that one of the participants of the action received injuries and were hospitalized. According to him, the protest was attended by activists with flags of “the Right sector”, “Azov”, the organization of Ukrainian nationalists (OUN), “Automaidan”.

“Strenia” he writes that the third anniversary of the protests in Kiev was the most numerous of similar protests in past years. As reported on air of the channel 112, the number of participants was about 500 people. The same number of demonstrators — from 400 to 500 calls and the interlocutor of RBC.

“Maidan” will not

Third anniversary of independence coincided with a new round of protests in Kyiv, caused by the increase in utility tariffs, as well as protests of the deceived investors of banks. Among those who supported the protesters, was not only radical nationalist forces, but the opposition, and from opposing camps — for example, the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc and the Opposition bloc formed in Parliament former members of the “Party of regions”.

To exaggerate value of protests during the anniversary of the events on the Maidan, experts and members of Ukrainian Parliament are not taken.

“Talking about the beginning of the “third Maidan” is premature. For mass protests, people have almost no funds to arrive to Kiev. There is discontent, but there is no way to accumulate”, — told RBC one of the opposition deputies of the Parliament (on condition of anonymity).

“It’s a popular fun — every year on independence to hold protests,” said RBC and Ukrainian political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko. To the office of Medvedchuk activists tried to RAID the office of Ukrainian billionaire Renat Akhmetov, and before the revolution of 2013-2014 in Ukraine is celebrated annually stocks the next anniversary “of the First Maidan of 2004,” recalls the expert.

But among the population of Ukraine there is a real dissatisfaction with the government, which caused by including economic problems, emphasizes Fesenko. “Two-thirds of Ukrainians do not trust the current government. But there is frustration in protests — just as the majority believes that a third Maidan will make it worse,” — said Fesenko.
