Scientists: save the yogurt from stress

Probiotics contained in yogurt and some biological supplements to decrease stress and anxiety. To such conclusion the American scientists from University of Missouri.

As a model organism experts used aquarium fish Danio rerio, which in experiments of this kind are quite often used. As it turned out, those fish food containing probiotics, to a lesser extent, were prone to anxiety and susceptible to stress than zebrafish trapped in a “control group”.

To create a “stressful situation”, scientists, including gradually pumped water from tanks with fish or ran in a tank with too many individuals. At the same time every day, the experts made the fish face with the new, unlike the previous cause for concern. That fish treated with probiotics, feel much calmer other, was evidenced by the fact that their metabolism was observed less changes associated with stress or anxiety.

The probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum, which was used by the professionals, no different from those that can be found in yogurt.

The results of their study, the scientists presented in the journal Scientific Reports.

It was already known that the intestinal microflora affects the nervous system. For example, eighteen months ago, Dutch scientists from Leiden University have shown that probiotics in yogurt reduce the risk of depression.
