“Now the level of our bilateral relations leaves much to be desired, hardly something to mess around in these respects, they are right at the bottom. But, of course, we hope that dialogue will be resumed and will start not simple and clear that it is not a quick process output relations in a constructive direction,” he said (quoted by “Interfax”).
The US President-elect Donald trump the day before, November 23, in conversation with journalists the new York Times objected to call any warming of relations between Russia and the U.S. “reset”. “I would not use this term after what happened,” said trump of the unsuccessful attempts of his rival in the election, a democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to improve relations between the two countries.
During the election campaign, Donald trump has repeatedly said that he intends to improve relations with Russia, while not specifying how he intends to do it. He also said he may meet with Russian President even before his inauguration.
November 14, trump and Putin discussed bilateral relations by telephone. During the conversation they “agreed to the assessment of the current extremely poor state of Russian-American relations” and agreed to actively work together to improve them.
According to The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, trump was inclined to give the post of Secretary of state to Republican MITT Romney. In 2012 during the presidential race, Romney called Russia “geopolitical enemy of the U.S. number one”. “I’m not going to wear rose-colored glasses, reflecting on Russia and Vladimir Putin, and I certainly am not going to promise him more flexibility after the presidential election. After the election he will receive from me greater stability”, — said Romney.
