Honor and “Honor”: a story of order emerging from the collapse of the Soviet Union

Reward for drummers

In the mid 1930-ies in the Soviet Union there was an active process of creating their own system of orders and medals. Among the first Soviet orders were a “badge of Honor” established by the Decree of the CEC of the USSR on 25 November 1935.

My mother’s glory. The story of the order “Mother-heroine”

The new order was given for high achievements in production, scientific research, government, socio-cultural, sports and other socially useful activities, and for acts of civic virtue. “Badge of Honor” along with the orders of Lenin and red banner of Labor has become a common reward for the first five drummers. At the time of its establishment “badge of Honor” was a “Junior” in the hierarchy of Soviet orders.

According to the Statute of the order, they could be awarded to: citizens of the USSR, enterprise, enterprises, institutions, organizations, districts, cities and other settlements; persons who are not citizens of the USSR, as well as enterprises, institutions, organizations, settlements of foreign States.

For the order “badge of Honor” almost since its establishment entrenched unofficial title of the most “peaceful” Soviet awards, although they have been noted and the military.

The order is oval in shape, framed by the sides of oak branches. In its centre are placed figures of working men and women, bearing symmetrically located left and right of the banner with the inscription “Proletarians of all countries, unite!”.

At the top of the order located five-pointed star, which on the background of the banner is embossed inscription “USSR”. In the lower part of the order placed embossed lettering “badge of HONOR”. The author of the award was the artist D. Golyadkin.

The first Decision of the CEC of the USSR on awarding the new order was signed on 26 November 1935.

There are discrepancies in who were the first to receive new awards. Largely, the confusion stems from the fact that the decision on awarding and the awarding procedure was quite far separated in time, which was awarded later received the prize before.

So, according to the Decree of 26 November, the order “badge of Honor” were awarded to a group of actors of ensemble of red army song and dance CDKA them. M. V. Frunze “for outstanding achievements of the ensemble in the case of the cultural services of the red army soldiers and commanders, workers and farmers”. At the same time reward number 1 was presented to the Chairman of the kolkhoz “Batyr” Tashkent region Artykbay Tillabaeva for labor heroism and success in raising productivity in cotton.

Got a new award and witty new name — “Jolly fellows”. This was due to the fact that male and female figures on the order reminded him of the first knights of the main characters of the Comedy film “Jolly fellows”, released shortly before the arrival of the order.

Only in the period from 1935 to 1991, took place on 1 580 850 awards according to the order. In 1988, the award has undergone changes, was amended by the Statute of the order, and its name has disappeared, the word “Sign”. From now on, the award was made the medal of Honor.

The first knight of the order of Merit was Gustav Gustavovich Ernesaks, Estonian composer and conductor, author of the national anthem of the Estonian SSR and artistic Director of State academic male choir of the Estonian Soviet socialist Republic “for merits in development and promotion of Soviet musical art.” It happened on 29 December 1988.

Soviet order of Honor did not last long, disappeared together with the Soviet Union. The latter was awarded the medal of Honor in the history of the Soviet Union on 21 December 1991 became the Director of the Belgorod cement plant of state concern “Cement” Anatoly Y. Litvin.

“We believe firmly in the sports heroes…”

Unlike many other Soviet awards order of Honor returned to the list of awards of the Russian Federation quite quickly. It was reestablished by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation of March 2, 1994 № 442.

Statute of the Russian order of Honor reads: “the Order of Honour is awarded to citizens for high achievements in state, production, scientific research, sociocultural, public and charitable activities, which allowed to significantly improve the living conditions of people, for merits in training highly skilled personnel, rising generation education, the maintenance of law and order.”

Champions among awarded the order “badge of Honor” in the Soviet period was the first Deputy head of the Omsk branch of the railroad, and then first Deputy Chairman of the Omsk city Council Nikolai Gritsevich and the people’s Commissar of health of the RSFSR, then people’s Commissar — Minister of health of the Kazakh SSR semen Chesnokov. Each of them has four of the order “badge of Honor”.

The order “badge of Honor”, and subsequently the medal of Honor very often, celebrated athletes who have achieved outstanding results. That’s why sports heroes among multiple knights this award.

9-time Olympic champion gymnast Larissa Latynina with the order “badge of Honor” was awarded three times. In 1999, these awards were added, and the Russian order of Honour.

Exactly the same “collection” of medals — three Soviet order “badge of Honor” and one of the Russian order of Merit from the perennial head of the National Olympic Committee of the USSR and then Russia Vitaly Smirnov.

Among those who was three times awarded the order “badge of Honor”, the famous Soviet skier Galina Kulakova and Olympic champion in equestrian sport Ivan Kalita.

Catch up if Plushenko Larisa Latynina?

But not only the athletes attract the attention among the knights of the order “badge of Honor”. For example, the pilot of transport aircraft Pavel Mikhailov during the great Patriotic war has made more than 520 night combat missions deep behind enemy lines, in the areas of actions of guerrilla groups. 65 times he flew to Yugoslavia, was delivered to units of the people’s liberation army of Yugoslavia of weapons and supplies, evacuated the wounded 247, moved through the front line 750 soldiers and officers. In June 1945, the pilot was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. After the war Pavel Mikhailov more than a quarter century has worked in civil aviation. His list of awards are three orders of “badge of Honor”.

The modern medal of Honor outwardly similar to its Soviet predecessor. It represents eight-pointed cross in the center of which is a round medallion covered in white enamel, with the volumetric image of the State emblem of the Russian Federation, bordered by a Laurel wreath.

But if the exterior of the new rewards different from the tradition, as already mentioned, many saved.

For example, two Russian medals of Honor for outstanding achievements in sport have with the Russian figure skater Evgeni Plushenko. Given that Plushenko only 32, and he, against all odds, tries again to return to the sport, it is possible that in the future, Eugene will be equal with Larisa Latynina and Vitaly Smirnov. And can, and will surpass them.
