In Amsterdam was held a Congress on cancer

From 27 to 30 January in Amsterdam hosted the European Congress on cancer (European Cancer Congress). In the framework of this event took place several presentations of scientific papers – including scientists spoke about new methods of diagnosis of diseases of oncological nature.

At Imperial College London (Imperial College London) offered an alternative to endoscopy in the early diagnosis of cancer of the stomach and esophagus. Every year, these two types of cancer found in 1.4 million patients. Symptoms of cancer of the stomach and esophagus is not obvious, they can be easily confused with symptoms of other diseases, and it is often too late for effective treatment. Five-year survival rate for these cancers is only 15%. Usually in the diagnosis of the endoscope is used – the procedure unpleasant, expensive, and in addition, after it can be additional complaints. A new test that measures the concentration of five chemical compounds in the exhaled gas may in many cases successfully replace endoscopy.

The scientific work was based on previously published articles in which the scientists noted that the body in cancer patients with lesions of the esophagus and stomach in comparison with other patients complained of abdominal pain and not suffering from this cancer, different levels of oil, valeric and Caproic acids as well as oil and delovogo aldehydes. Thus was revealed the “chemical signature” of cancer of the esophagus and stomach, and the staff of the Imperial London College have conducted a study to test whether it is possible to develop a test that will diagnose cancer on the basis of this signature.

Participated in 335 patients from 4 hospitals. 163 of them suffered from tumours of the stomach and esophagus, other 172 endoscopic examination of cancer cells is not found. Samples of exhaled air collected from the participants, was sent for mass spectrometry. The overall accuracy of the analysis was 85%. In 81% of cases the chemical signature showed that patients have tumors of the stomach or esophagus, and in 80% of patients do not suffer from this type of cancer. The representative of a group of scientists Sheraz Markar (Sheraz Markar) explained that cancer cells, unlike healthy, emit other chemical compounds, and added that his and his colleagues suggests that cancer can be diagnosed on the exhale. However, before clinical application of the test may take quite a long amount of time – study should be repeated on large samples of patients. The research group is also working to create tests for the diagnosis of colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer.

As for pancreatic cancer – another group of scientists has declared that its presence may indicate rapid development of diabetes or a sharp deterioration of the patient if the diabetes he already diagnosed. Employees of Scientific research Institute of prophylactic (International Prevention Research Institute) in Lyon, France, compared the data of approximately one million patients with type 2 diabetes from Italy and Belgium, with information on cases of cancer of the pancreas. It turned out that 50% of these cases were recorded for years after the patient received the diagnosis of “diabetes”. If the person suffered from diabetes for a long time, and his condition suddenly began to deteriorate, requiring more active treatment is likely the cause was also in tumors of the pancreas.

What to do if diagnosed, told “Izvestia”. Online edition published “step-by-Step instructions for the struggle for life” eight-point – from diagnosis to treatment.
