Trolling is a kind of pattern of behavior (mostly online), implying provocation interlocutors in hate speech, inciting quarrels and senseless confrontations and some other antisocial actions. By the way, the name of this term, contrary to popular belief, was not in honor of the trolls from fairy tales and myths, and in honor of one of the methods of fishing. Often, the sole purpose of “Internet Troll” is getting pleasure from the fact that the other person loses his temper.

To find out whether such behavior is typical mainly for men, the researchers conducted a survey among users of social networks, and then came to the conclusion that “trolls” really are most often representatives of the stronger sex aged 20 to 40 years. After analyzing the results, the experts came to the conclusion that antisocial behaviour for young men is a way to show one’s own narcissistic tendencies.

The scientists published their article in the journal Computers in Human Behaviour.

Narcissism is a personality trait that involves inflated self-esteem, the tendency to narcissism, pleasure attention to his own person. The term comes from the Greek myth of Narcissus — a beautiful young man, fell in love with his own reflection.

Some psychologists include narcissism in the so-called “dark triad” of personality traits, which also includes Machiavellianism (desire to manipulate other people and their exploitation), and also psychopathy (impulsive behavior and ruthlessness).
