Meeting of foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary Rex Tillerson, which was held at the permanent mission to the UN on Sunday evening local time, is over, it lasted about 45 minutes, reported the correspondent of “Interfax”.
The meeting was informal and took place at the initiative of the American side.
The official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova told reporters: “on September 17 in new York held a meeting of Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of state Tillerson. The parties discussed cooperation on the Syrian crisis and other aspects of the situation in the middle East and North Africa, as well as the implementation of the Minsk agreements.”
The Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on international Affairs Konstantin Kosachev does not exclude that one of the reasons the meeting the head of Russian foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary Rex Tillerson could be meeting on the UN reform, which will be held on Monday.
“I think, Yes,” he told reporters in new York, responding to a question about whether one of the reasons for the meeting, the meeting on the UN reform on Monday, organised by the President of the United States Donald trump.
“Of course, the two countries that are permanent members of the Security Council need to coordinate their actions in the context of the upcoming UN General Assembly”, he added. Kosachev said that he sees this as a “good sign”. “It would be worse if this meeting was not” – he stressed.
