– The head of special forces, “al-Quds”, which is part of the Islamic revolutionary guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran, General Qassem Soleimani at least three times visited Iraqi Kurdistan to mediate in talks between Erbil and Baghdad, according to Western media.
According to them, Soleimani met with the leaders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Sulaymaniyah and the day before, as the Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi ordered to launch an attack on Kirkuk.
Through his mediation an agreement was reached on the withdrawal of the Kurdish militia Peshmerga from Kirkuk and its capture under the control of Iraqi troops.
On October 16 Iraqi forces entered Kirkuk province, taking control of key infrastructure and oil fields.
Later the Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi ordered to withdraw from Kirkuk all armed groups including government forces.
