The project “Bibliohroniki” allows you to make a trip to the book the time machine

After speaking with concerned students at prestigious universities of the capital have the feeling that by the centennial of the October revolution passed slowly. Thought, based on texture — sparse, serious conclusions — even more so. Although where they occur, if history is increasingly politicized, and historical consciousness formed hastily-cut gears, short movies, TV shows, comics… Reliable sources are ignored, among which Newspapers and journals published in the year of the revolution and the surrounding time period.

All of last year such periodicals from its collection, the creators of the project “Bibliohroniki” Alexei and Sergei Vengerov charged in the capital’s exhibition halls, book fairs… Among the Russian media that has passed virtually unnoticed. But when the exhibition found out foreign journalists and cultural figures — the exhibition immediately went on tour through Europe…

Correspondent “MK” understands why is so important such projects are and how he created an encyclopedic work, “Bibliohroniki”.

Title page women’s Tom “Bibliohroniki”.

She was born including on the basis of the materials shown by collectors at the shows. The strength and uniqueness of the exhibits, the dignity of the exhibition space is half of the success of such projects. Everything can be hampered by weak or nedokruchennym concept. Collectors, on account of which not one show seem to understand this, it is quite the ambiguous title of the exhibition: “the Redness will save the world?”(It first showed at the gallery “na Kashirke”.)

In addition to the various associations we are talking about concrete things — journals with the title words “red” or a predominance of this color in the artwork. Selected magazines, such as “Atheist at the bench”, “beach”, “Pain”, “Red”, “Red Raven”, “Red bell”, “Red guard”, and “Yes officer” and “Red Petrograd” — is so characteristic that there is a feeling of a busy background time. Not all publications strictly dated 1917, but each demonstrates the transition from one historical epoch to another.

Gallery of covers — the view changes the visual line of images and events, the next vector in Russian history. They unwittingly impel the viewer to the assessment of the events. Delicious women’s magazines and simultaneously astroscience editions of the eve of the great historical upheavals — the focus is moved to ideological myths. Visual shock: the cover is made by first class artists, including Boris Kustodiev, Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, Dmitry Moore, Alexander Rodchenko, Varvara Stepanova, the Stenberg brothers…

Look at the history of Russia eyes of contemporaries and their descendants with the transmission of the atmosphere and intensity of the change of epochs, reflected in the cover. Journals, these convincing witnesses of historical events that perfectly complement the posters and photographs that convey the spirit and shaped a system of critical years, keep the “materiality” of time. The exhibits in perfect condition. This is one of the main principles which guided the collectors. It is not surprising that their pieces are snapped up.

It all began back in 1991, when thundered collectors exhibition “Russian art” in Nuremberg (Germany). No wonder the Berlin edition of the “People of the book” in 2005 wrote: “the Exhibition was a resounding success. It can be argued that the fact that it was unexpected and not even assume, for the first time in the twentieth century was an exhibition of 200 of the best samples of old Russian books. The exhibition was not only and not so much in the life of the bibliophilic how much broader phenomenon — a pan-European cultural and acquired in some sense, even political.”

Exhibition on the circumstances took place almost on the eve of the August 1991 events in Moscow. In celebration of the year over the building of the old Nuremberg city hall (there was exposure), flags of the USSR, Germany and Bavaria. It was the last precedent, when in the middle of Western Europe, on the occasion of cultural events were fluttering scarlet banner. No less unique was the catalogue of the exhibition — the first in this genre in the entire history of printing, issued in three languages.

Following this, in 1994, collectors have published a chronicle “the Life and times of Moscow. Century XVII”. This description decade by decade, the history of everyday life (in fact, existence) of Moscow in one of the coolest, a crucial period in Russian history. Formed the basis of the evidence of contemporaries, serious study, scientific and popular publications.

So the case went to the exhibition “the twentieth century. We cover” that took place in the Department of private collections Pushkin Museum. Pushkin in 2000. it would Seem, the usual selection of periodicals from a private collection, but it turned into a retrospective of magazine covers Russian-language publications of the twentieth century. With detailed reference information, the international (Russian, German, English added French) catalog continued the tradition laid down by the exhibition “Old Russian book”. The chronological principle of placing the material finally appreciated as a fundamental.

Among the many responses that caused the organizers of the exhibition the most favorable response, was superior to their emotional all the others: “Makarevich is dead would envy — that you have “time machine”; “Great! I never even yawned!”(spelling preserved). Before the birth of the “Bibliohroniki” remained one step…

This is a unique literary monument encyclopedic format and content. He looks like a perfectly illustrated, chronologically structured series of themed volumes, which interpreted Russian history as seen through books. They are not considered as items, but as witnesses of the time. A variety of visual range is complemented by not just texts and entangled novellas, dedicated to a particular book rarity. Unexpected angles, depth of disclosure topics, imagery, event…

Pleasing and artistic-printing, “Bibliohroniki”: printing, quality of binding, “detection”, silk ribbon (bookmark) the colors of the Russian flag, coated paper, font, color… Cover — a separate conversation, because skin color is carefully chosen for each volume: for children, for women — pale purple, military — color gap cannonballs…

For 14 years, born 13 — 10 Russian and 3 bilingual editions. The print run — 500 copies. Authors create the project independently, in a team of like-minded people. Releases are generally distributed, although the series popular in the major libraries of the world: from MSU and RGB to Stanford and Oxford, Krasnodar, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa…

The whole project is aimed not so much at improving the professional level of specialists, how many (and mostly) for educating the reader. The first three volumes of award of the Russian Government in the field of culture. Award in 2012 was presented by Vladimir Putin.

The authors of compilers, there is an irresistible desire to carry out a more affordable edition (regular cover, less refined paper and printing), if anyone wants to participate in this action, deeming it useful.
