When stories about scientific discoveries the majority of people draws the imagination something incredible, although professionals, many of them routine. For example, the Russian students found the second “own” island in the New Earth – study they conducted on images taken from space.
New island glacier Vilkitsky-South, was found at the all-Russia youth readings named Queen in Samara students Artem Makarenko and Valeria Saenko. He appeared due to the melting of glaciers near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, and to see him was possible thanks to images from space.
As representatives of the children’s center “Artek”, where the guys began their work, research students are not new. In 2016 Valeriy Saenko was a member of the group discovered the island near Novaya Zemlya. He called “Crystal”.
“Under the leadership of scientists from the Institute of geography, Russian Academy of Sciences and Moscow state University named after M. V. Lomonosov Artem Makarenko and Valeriy Saenko continued observation of the melting of glaciers in images of remote sensing. About your new discovery, they said during the XII all-Russian youth scientific readings to them. S. P. Korolev held in January-February of this year in Samara University. And in may 2018, they will make reports at the conference of young scientists-glaciologists at the Institute of Arctic and Antarctic in St. Petersburg”, – said in an official statement “Artek”.
“Russian geographical society” have confirmed that the application for the opening of Islands off the South arm of the glacier Vilkitsky in fact, been filed, but any details to report are unable, explaining that currently, the information is specified.
– It is quite likely. There now there is an intensive melting, the new island could easily break free. Moreover, just on the New earth now to find a new island in General, it happens. In the entire Russian Arctic region it is the largest melting object. A year ago my colleagues and I explored the map, which pointed out several such island. Another thing is that in order to consider the appearance of the island needed a very high quality. Often it is a commercial, very expensive pictures, allowing to measure the glaciers. Students, most likely, watched those photos are in the public domain, comparing old and new – explained “MK” glaciologist Mary Ananicheva, leading researcher, Institute of geography RAS.
According to published data, the study was conducted on the images of domestic spacecraft remote sensing (RS) “kanopus-V” and the European Landsat-7/8 and Sentinel-1/2.
Students scientific Director Alexei Kucheiko, an expert in the field of space remote sensing systems and curator of the project, told “MK” that gave young scientists thinking in this direction.
– The idea for this work came from the guys with initiatives in the education space. My wife and specializiruetsya on teaching satellite image processing. Projects related to the environment, geography — our interests, because from space you can see dumps, oil spills, changes in riverbeds. The Arctic is a separate area of work; we regularly look at the pictures in August-September when the snow melts, you can see the border of the ice. We remove the front contours, and a year later repeated. So we measure the change of the area of the glacier. The rate of retreat is now increased, this was particularly noticeable in the abnormally warm year 2016 in the Northern hemisphere, then it tripled. Where ice is visible beneath a rocky ledge in the sea — where the island is formed, it can be seen the curves and shadows. Glacier Vilkitsky was common in the 1950-ies and then divided into two branches, and there was visible a rocky ledge.
