The chess tournament contenders: why the leader was Vladimir Kramnik

In Berlin ran these chess passion! Started the candidates Tournament, the winner of which will fight for the chess crown from the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen. The competition was attended by eight eminent grandmasters, among them three Russians, including Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander Grischuk and Sergey Karjakin. But not all intellectuals are happy with the initial results and the conditions in which they play.

Not very well, the competition began to Sergey Karjakin — the winner of the last candidates tournament. In the first game, which lasted more than seven hours, he black color defeated Azerbaijan grandmaster Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. But our athlete is not ready to give up, after losing in the first round — still not a sentence.

– Probably, before the tournament started I was more optimistic than now.But the tournament will last for a long time, and I hope I still have chances to win. For this I need to find their game. In the 2014 candidates tournament in Khanty-Mansiysk I also started poorly, but eventually took the second place and even fought for the victory”, – said at the press conference Karjakin.

Also, with each other in the first round was played by the Russians, Vladimir Kramnik and Alexander Grischuk. The strongest in this battle was former world champion Kramnik. In the second round, Sergey Karjakin parted with him for the world, Alexander Grischuk won the American grandmaster Wesley so. The third day brought victory to Vladimir Kramnik who beat the black color of Levon Aronian. Sergey Karjakin played out a draw with Alexander Grischuk, and the same result, and Wesley so vs. Ding Liren, Fabiano Caruana-Mamedyarov Shakhriyar. Thus, after the three parties is the sole leader was Vladimir Kramnik, who scored 2.5 points. On Tuesday, March 13, participants in the day.

International grandmaster, Honored coach of Russia, the senior trainer of national teams of the city of Moscow Alexander Zlochevsky shared with the “MK” his impression of the tournament and explained why, in his view, his client was Sergey Karjakin wrong game.

– This competition is perhaps one of the strongest in recent times. Not enough, probably, only Vishy Anand and Vachier-Lagrave. Then there would be a whole top ten without Magnus Carlsen. I cheer for our athletes and, of course, for his ward Sergei Karjakin. But I think he has little chance to win. His last year was literally torn to pieces: television, politics, high-level techniques. This could not but affect its shape and training. The main favorites, I think Fabiano Caruana and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Also, the strongest thought Levon Aronian, but he’s in the third round lost to Vladimir Kramnik. And now, after three matches played, the leadership was seized by Kramnik. I think he also will fight for victory, although he is the most senior of the participants in the candidates Tournament.

Many of the participants, the fans and commentators are dissatisfied with the condition of the competition. The room in the style of “Loft” not everyone had to taste and in the dressing room, which is attended by the players, as it turned out, in the first days don’t even have hot water. But the most glaring mistake on the part of the organizers of the unwitting “help” of the commentator. During the first round Shakhriyar Mamedyarov looked up and saw one of the monitors, the party that commented on the famous grandmaster Judit Polgar. Azerbaijani chess player immediately went to the judge and asked to remove the monitor. Fortunately, the real clues in that moment did not happen, Shahriar managed to prevent them.

For the candidates keep track of not only players but also media persons. For example, Tina Kandelaki shares his thoughts on the matter:

Eight elegant and very smart men will determine who of them is worthy to play in the match for the title of world chess champion. Among the eight candidates three Russians, including Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander Grischuk and Sergey Karjakin. The winner of the tournament will then play against the Norwegian chess genius Magnus Carlsen. We’ve learned that sport is a perfect body, speed and strength. I wonder how then to treat the players? For you they’re athletes or more scientists?

Once Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov and Boris Spassky gave women incredible interest. The players were the elite of the sport, their attention was hard to win and that only makes it more interesting – says Kandelaki.
