– Norilsk Nickel asked the government to discuss with Chinese authorities to increase duties on Nickel, said in an interview to “Russia 24” the basic owner and the President of “Norilsk Nickel” Vladimir Potanin.
China in the beginning of 2018 has raised the import duty on refined Nickel from 1% to 2%. Norilsk Nickel, one of the largest producers of Nickel exports to China about 30% of the produced metal. In 2017, Norilsk Nickel produced 217 thousand tons of Nickel.
“It is not very material for a company such as Norilsk Nickel, the losses measured in the tens of millions of dollars. But here more important is the psychological aspect. If Russian-Chinese cooperation is, therefore, Russian companies should not be discriminated against Australian or any other. In this sense, we have the support of the government – this issue with the Chinese leadership delivered. I think shopping questions concerning “Norilsk Nickel”, will be discussed at the highest level,” said Potanin.
Nickel from Australia is shipped to China duty-free under the agreement on free trade.
