– The Swedish Academy awarded the Nobel prize for literature, announced the decision not to present this award in 2018, the Associated Press reports. As expected, the award for 2018 will be awarded in the next year – with an award in 2019.
In a statement, the Academy says that this decision was made “due to current reduced part of the Swedish Academy and a lower level of confidence in the Academy by the public”.
However, notes the AP, in recent weeks around the Academy flare up scandals in connection with allegations of sexual harassment and alleged financial fraud.
Last fall, one of the largest Newspapers of Sweden “Dagens Nyheter” published a material in which 18 women accused of assaulting a prominent figure of Jean-Claude Arnaud, who heads a cultural center, funded at the expense of the Nobel Foundation. The lawyer of the 71-year-old Arnault has denied the accusations saying that his client was the victim of a witch hunt.
As recalled by AP, Arno had previously suspected that he was the source of leaks about the names of the award winners. After that, the Swedish Academy broke all ties with him and stopped issuing grants.
In the entire history of the Nobel prize, which began in 1901, its presentation in various fields was revoked 49 times. Award was not awarded between 1940 to 1942. The prize for literature was not awarded in 1914, 1918, 1935 and between 1940 and 1943. In 1935 the decision was taken because the Committee did not consider anyone worthy of reward.
