Convicted of doping, the American swimmers were forced to give the gold to the Russians

The international swimming Federation (FINA) cancelled the results of the US team in all competitions during the last world Junior championship. One of the members of the team, swimmer Matthew Willenbring, was accused of doping.


As reported by R-Sport, the athlete passed the positive test during the world Championships in Indianapolis in August 2017. Willenbrink was disqualified for four months beginning October 19, 2017.

Also FINA has cancelled the results of all relay races, in which participated at the fault of the swimmer.

As a result, the Americans were denied gold medals in the combined relay race, in which Russians took the second place. The Federation has obliged Americans to pass the medals the Russian athletes.

While the U.S. team may challenge this decision in Sports arbitration court.

Note that in that race the Russians Nikita Tretyakov, Evgeny Somov, Yegor Kuimov and Ivan Girev lost to the Americans 0.15 seconds.
