The Mediterranean diet and other food packages that fit into the idea of “healthy eating”, allow people to avoid macular degeneration — diseases that affect the retina and interferes with Central vision. Age-related macular degeneration is one of the most frequent causes of blindness in people over 55 years.
Experts have divided the diet into two types — “East”, which are characterized by a large number of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains and seafood, and “West”, that is, involving large quantities of red meat and high in fats and carbohydrates. The researchers then compared the 18 studies each of which had previously been marked as valid, and tested whether the choice of diet on the risk of developing vision problems.
As it turned out, people eating in accordance with the “Oriental” diet, suffered from macular degeneration is significantly less. According to experts, it may serve as a confirmation that diets similar to the Mediterranean, help, including, and maintain visual acuity even in older age.
The study was published in the journal of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
