The market of Internet piracy in Russia by the end of 2017 increased by 21% compared to the previous $85 million it can be concluded from the research company Group-IB (RBC).
The number of requests of Russian users on popular search engines for movies and TV series for free for the last year amounted to nearly 10 billion, estimated by experts of Group-IB Anti-Piracy (is engaged in protection of intellectual property on the Internet). “On the basis of the total Runet audience — about 90 million people, per user, on average, about 110 hits pirated copies of paintings”, — concluded the experts of Group-IB.
The number of thefts of the content on cinema screens in 2017 has increased more than six — fold, from 33 to 211 “ekrano” (shot on video copies of movies). Thus, for the first eight months of this year, the number published on the Internet of pirated copies already exceeded 280. It means that almost each of the 320 tapes, released in January—August in Russian cinemas, has been copied by pirates and posted to the network, said Group-IB.
How many Premier
In 2017, the Russian box office grew by 10.9%, to 53.6 billion rubles, indicated in the report of the cinema Fund. Just in the last year in Russia came 471 film, of which 123 Russian.
The arms race
Despite the achievements of the state and industry in the fight against piracy, illegal distribution of video content in Russia is still showing growth, says Andrew Basargin, head of the Department of innovative brand protection and intellectual property Group-IB. According to experts, this is due to the fact that Internet pirates are investing significant resources in the creation of a technological base.
“The past year has shown that for fast delivery of movies and TV shows to users, simplify monetization schemes and auto-complete website illegal content technology is increasingly used CDN (Content Distribution Network, content delivery network),” reads the study.
Such networks, experts Group-IB, unite around the world a lot of servers with specialized software. Minimum download time is possible to achieve due to the fact that the user request goes to the nearest CDN server.
The emergence of CDN services, according to Basargin, simplifies the job and by Internet pirates, as it gives them the ability to quickly and easily fill the page of the website diverse content of good quality. “Access to an extensive database of content, on the one hand, he says, and a clear pattern of monetization on the other, allow you to create a pirated turnkey website for some 10-15 minutes.”
The monthly cost of support for the infrastructure of a CDN service, the amount of server space which can be up to 5 Pb (more than 300 thousand files), is, according to experts of Group-IB, about $100 million To create a pirate online goes for about $240. The average earnings of the pirates for 1000 views is $3. “Thus, the average monthly income with a major pirate sites can reach $10 thousand” — sums up the experts.
The monetization of piracy is directly dependent on the advertising traffic, more than 75% of the search engines, experts say, adding that the total volume of traffic of videoparty for 2017 increased by 12% and continues to grow. The main advertisers of pirate films and series, as stated in the study are online casinos and gaming sites.
Representatives of Group-IB refused to tell RBC what search engines operating in Russia, is the main supplier of traffic to pirate sites. The company only noted that he had reviewed the results in all popular search engines: Google, Yandex, Bing and Yahoo.
Forward to the record
Most often pirated videos are distributed through “Yandex” and Google, as well as in social networks “Vkontakte” and “Classmates”, said RBC Alexei Bardin, General Director of Association “Internet video” (includes online cinemas Ivi, Megogo, TVZavr, etc.). But Google works in Russia according to the same principles as in the USA, says Bardin. In particular, this engine meets the requirements of copyright law in the digital age (Digital Millennium Copyright Act, DMCA) and remove from search results links to pirated content at the request of the copyright holder.
“At the same time, the platform of “Yandex.Video” is currently the largest pirate video service. With Yandex you can fight only through the courts,” said Bardin, Recalling that now the search engine is suing the TV channels one of the largest Russian media holding “Gazprom-Media”.
The current year, and all can deliver record the number of viewers of movies and TV shows on the pirate sites, the experts of Group-IB. This can affect the performance of the film, the Chairman of the Board of the Association of owners of cinemas Oleg Berezin. In the first eight months of 2018 the Russian cinema box office amounted to about 34 billion rubles, which is 8% less compared with the same period of 2017, follows from the preliminary data of the “Bulletin of film distributors.”
